Ripon came within two points of winning the Trans-Valley League wrestling tournament but still claimed an overall co-championship with Hilmar as the two teams split the dual-meets championship and league-meet championship on Saturday at Ripon High.

“We were happy with how the kids wrestled,” Indians coach Glen White said. “We had a freshman step up at 154 (Adrian Reyes) and some JV guys stepped up to score some points and we did really well.

“I was happy that we were able to finish second which gave us an overall co-championship. We came on strong at the end and came within two points – that’s about as close as you can get to winning without winning.”

Ripon’s Diego Moreno (162 pounds) took first place and was named outstanding middleweight wrestler.

The top-four wrestlers will advance to the two-day Sac-Joaquin Section Division V championships on Friday at Natomas High School.

Representing Ripon will be Moreno, Donny Fontillas (122, first), Jason Rhodes (197, first),

Andrew Huynh (108, second), Justin Swilley (115, second), Anthony Latno (134, second),

Brandon Rosa (184, third), Juan Ruiz (222, third), Owen Gollinger (287, third) and Steven Duelas (172,  fourth).
