The Ripon and Sierra baseball teams will have to win two straight on the same night to advance to the final round of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
On Saturday, Ripon fell 8-3 to Dixon at Stockton’s Billy Hebert Field to start the best-of-three semifinal series in Division V. Sierra, seeded second in Division III, was walloped 13-4 by No. 11 Yuba City at McAuliffe Memorial Ballparks in Sacramento.
Both area teams were victimized by big-inning outbursts by their opponents. In Stockton, No. 3 Dixon (22-4) rallied to score all eight of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The first six Rams players reached base, and Dominic Portillo doled out a two-run single to highlight the barrage.
Ripon (16-11), which led 1-0 after the first inning, scored its final two runs in the top of the seventh. Jarrod Andrews and Nick Price each drove in a run for the Indians, but the team only had four knocks as it failed to capitalize on five Dixon errors while leaving eight runners on base.
Winning pitcher John Jordan went five innings and didn’t have any strikeouts but gave up only one hit. The Division V series resumes Tuesday, 4 p.m. back at Billy Hebert Field. Dixon moves onto the finals with a win. A Ripon win forces a rubber match to be played following the conclusion of Game 2.
Sierra (19-6-1) had a five-game winning streak snapped by Yuba City (18-12), the Cinderella story of the Division III bracket. The Honkers previously took out No. 6 Oakdale 10-5 in the first round and No. 3 Christian Brothers 7-6 in the quarterfinal.
They were in full command against Valley Oak League champion Sierra on Saturday. Yuba City led 1-0 before breaking it open with four runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth and five in the seventh.
The Timberwolves didn’t get on board until the bottom of the seventh when Zak DeRossett belted a two-run single. Seth Santos added a double. Sierra had a chance to damage earlier when it had th ebases loaded and one out in the bottom of the third, but the Honkers were able to escape the jam.
Yuba City racked up 15 hits and was led by Taylor Doyle (3 for 5, triple, two RBIs). Daniel Au (3 for 4, two runs, two RBIs) and Danny Dunham (three runs).
Sierra looks to bounce back at 4 o’clock Wednesday, with the “if” game scheduled for later that night.
