In need of a confidence boost, Ripon High’s volleyball team got just that in Wednesday’s sweep of Hughson on the road.

The five-time defending champion of the Trans-Valley League opened conference action with successive three-game losses to Hilmar and Escalon. First-year coach Adrienne Uecker is hopeful that Wednesday’s effort is a sign of better days to come.

“Everyone played very well tonight,” she said. “I am so proud of my girls. We had a lot of fun and our hard work has paid off.”

Alyssa Leslie and Bridgette Gall led a balanced attack, finishing with nine and six kills, respectively. They each also had two blocks to share team-high honors.

Katherine Ratto had a big night in the back row, finishing with 34 digs. Paige Burrell had 18 to go with three kills.

Mariah Cardenas and Madison Allen shared setting duties. Cardenas was an all-around performer, turning in 16 assists, eight digs, two kills and two aces. Allen dished out 15 assists.

Ripon (1-2, 6-7 overall) plays host to Modesto Christian on Monday.
