Ripon High’s coed tennis team secured its first outright league title since 1987 with Tuesday’s 8-1 victory over Modesto Christian.

The Indians finished 9-1 in the Trans-Valley League with their lone loss coming against Riverbank. The league championship also guarantees that they’ll get to host a match in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs next week.

“Two years ago when I became coach we finished dead last,” Ripon coach Robert Mayfield said. “Last year we finished second by just a couple of points, so it was nice to pull it out this year. It’s definitely fun to make a little bit of history and I’m happy for the kids.”

Defending TVL boys singles champion Bryce Coutrakis defeated Connor Soderstrom 6-3, 6-2 in his final regular-season match. Exchange student Nik Lengert won 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 boys singles match, and Shannon Wesley picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2 girls.

Ripon dominated the doubles matches and got a free point at No. 2 girls via default. Earning wins for the Indians were Isaiah Sanchez/Ian Flanders (6-1, 6-3), Federico Entrade/Fidel Perez (6-0, 6-1), Hailey Johnson/Maddison Flanders (6-3, 6-0) and Diego Franco-Carreno/Emily O’Brien (6-3, 6-1).

“The thing that standouts out most about us is that we’re a little bit deeper across the board than most teams,” Mayfield said. “Riverbank and Escalon are both top heavy on both the boys and girls side, but we had a lot of first-year seniors that came out unexpectedly and won a lot of matches for our team.”

The league tournament is Friday at Saturday at the SOS Club in Modesto.
