Ripon tunes up for showdown with Escalon

Chris Musseman expects better play out of his Ripon High boys golf team the next two days.

The Indians were gift-wrapped a win — they carded a 229 while host Modesto Christian did not have enough to field a full team — at Modesto Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday but will have to earn one today when they travel to Oakdale Golf & Country Club to face Trans-Valley League-leading Escalon.  Then on Thursday Ripon (7-1) welcomes third place Hilmar.

“If we play like we did today it’s not going to cut it,” Musseman said. “But it’s hard to go into a match completely focused knowing that you already have the victory.”

Kole Gonzalez was co-medalist with Modesto Christian’s Anthony Helou with a 7-over-par 42. The windy conditions affected all players involved. Nick Sharp, a TVL Most Outstanding Player contender, settled for a 43. Josh Angel and Justin Brito each turned in a 47, while Luis Candido finished with a 50.
