Ripon’s Ilardi earns Trans Valley MVP recognition

PATTERSON — Escalon is the undefeated boys golf champion in the Trans-Valley League for a second straight season, but with a chance to earn a share of the crown Ripon made things interesting Monday at Diablo Grande’s Ranch Course.

The two teams both finished with 440s in the league tournament, and Escalon go the nod for having the higher score between the throw-out scorers. Ripon’s Nico Ilardi was individual medalist, and he earned both Most Outstading and MVP honors with the win.

Hughson (8-4), which placed third in the tournament with a 465 and in the final standings, will join Escalon (12-0) and Ripon (10-2) on Monday, May 6 for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V Tournament at Mather Golf Course. The top six individuals not part of these qualifying teams also move on.

Ilardi shined in the league finale with a 7-over-79, three better than second-place Danny Bava of Escalon. Escalon’s Steven Gately and Hughson’s Jason Vinh tied for third with 83s.

Ilardi capped his season-long dominance with 93 league points. Escalon’s Nathan Sarkozy ended up second with 75.

Ripon’s Cade McCusker earned a spot on the All-TVL team, placing fourth overall in the standings with 63 points after carding an 87 on Monday, Aidan Niilsson contributed a solid 89 for the Indians, Kenny Johnson had a 92 and Jacob Baird a 93.
