Tuesday’s midseason tournament at Las Positas Golf Course in Livermore was all about the individuals of the Trans-Valley League.
Go figure.
Ripon High produced what would have been a season-low 405, but it was still an encouraging performance overall for the league undefeated Indians. The TVL’s midseason tournament is an opportunity for individuals to garner points in the race for MVP and all-league honors.
“That’s one of the better team scores we’ve had in my seven years of coaching golf at Ripon,” coach Chris Musseman said. “The guys were solid from top to bottom, and most of them hadn’t even seen (the course) before.”
Sophomore Nick Sharp picked up runner-up points with a 2-over-par 74. With 2012 league MVP Kyle Intorf dropping in the points standings with his fifth-place score of 80, it appears to be a two-man race between Sharp and Hilmar standout Landon Azevedo, who was low medalist with a 72.
Ripon’s top five players picked up all-league points Tuesday. Robby Figeroid placed third with a 77, and Jack Brierly and Nathan Suender finished with 84s. Kyle Head turned in an 86, and Cole Herrin finished with a 95.
And in case you’re wondering, Hilmar’s team total of 422 was second best. The Yellow jackets are currently in first place in the team standings at 5-0, but Ripon (4-0) has make-up matches still left to play.
“It was a good measuring stick for us,” Musseman said. “It’s the first time this season that we get to see everyone in league together for one tournament, so now we have an idea where we stack up.”
