STOCKTON – Rivals from the city of Manteca came together Sunday to lead the South to a 3-0 win over the North in the San Joaquin Soccer Alliance Senior Showdown at Delta College.

East Union’s Hector Romero got the south on the board in the 16th minute when he took a cross from Sierra’s Joel Lemus and buried it into the net for a 1-0 lead.

“It was a fun experience being here,” Lemus said. “It was great for the whole VOL to come together.”

Lemus and Romero have played together on other teams.

“I have played with (Lemus) before so we have some type of chemistry,” Romero said. “When I saw him go for the ball I ran for the front and it was there.”

That score held until the 72nd minute with Manteca’s Aron Navarrete scored off of an assist from Tracy’s Jamie Medal to make the score 2-0. Medal added an insurance goal in stoppage time.

“This was fun,” Navarrete said. “We see these guys during the season and then in the end all the good ones came together to play a game.

“On my goal I saw the ball coming across and I think it deflected off of a defender and I just got it.”

East Union’s Edgar Zelaya coached the South squad.

“This was different,” Zelaya said. “I have my own kids and I don’t know the other kids much, but it was fun. It was all about fun.”

Joining Romero on the squad from East Union were Arturo Galvan, Victor Hurtado and Cameron Chapman. Fabian Lopez and Eriq Kurys were on the team from Sierra as were Bryant Ortiz and Eddie Medina from Weston Ranch.
