Ripon showed its moxie Thursday morning by dealing Sierra of Fresno a 39-35 loss in a hard-fought and aggressive matchup for 11th place in the sapphire bracket of the West Coast Jamboree at Brentwood’s Heritage High.
Rachel Rodriguez finished the game with 16 points, while Kendra Contente had nine as the Indians (9-3) rebounded from Wednesday’s 48-41 defeat to Weston Ranch.
“It was a really physical game, and I think we peaked at the right time,” Ripon head coach George Contente said. “It was really a defensive showdown, and we couldn’t get anything going offensively to start the game.
“We really picked it up in the fourth quarter. That’s when we started to get things moving.”
Ripon will take the court next on Tuesday when they travel to Hilmar to start the Trans Valley League season.

Buchanan 60, Weston Ranch 53
Despite three chances to take the lead in the consolation championship, Weston Ranch (6-5) couldn’t get over the hump against Buchanan of Fresno.
“We came out a little bit flat in the third quarter, but we put ourselves in a position to win the game three times,” Weston Ranch head coach Chris Bauer said. “We just couldn’t get the ball to roll in for us.”
The Cougars will open up the Valley Oak League season on Tuesday, Jan. 4 at Oakdale.
