Manteca’s girls soccer team overcame poor field and weather conditions Friday at Central Catholic, netting all of its goals in the second half for a 3-1 Valley Oak League victory.
Cami Silva had a role in all of the Buffaloes’ scores, banging in the first on a set piece and getting the second off an assist from Serenity Cerritos. Silva then delivered the corner-kick cross that teed up Jaylyn Ruiz’s insurance goal.
The Buffaloes (2-0-0 VOL, 15-1-1 overall) finished with a 10-5 edge in shots on goal and had some key efforts on the back end. Coach Justin Coenenberg lauded goalie Haylie Brasil for making “some big-time saves.” Additionally, freshman defender Mackenzie Forsberg was tasked with marking dangerous winger Harlye Holliday, doing “a phenomenal job.”
Manteca has two pivotal league matches next week against Oakdale and Sierra.
Ceres 1, Lathrop 0
Visiting Ceres (4-1-1, 5-3-1 overall) escaped with an important win in the Western Athletic Conference, scoring in the final minutes.
Lathrop fell to 2-2-3 in the WAC and 5-7-3 overall but is still in contention for one of three postseason spots with the second half of the league schedule still remaining.
“It was a battle from the beginning like we knew it would be,” Lathrop coach Diana Nevarez said. “Our back line was solid for us and played their hearts out.”
