Lathrop’s girls basketball team exacted revenge on Thursday with its 55-36 thumping of visiting Pacheco in Western Athletic Conference play.

The two teams previously met in the Los Banos Tournament a month ago with the Panthers (1-1, 11-6 overall) prevailing, 52-45.

In the rematch, freshman Shakara Porter spearheaded the Spartans’ 23-6 first-quarter run, while Tatiana Lowery got her shot going in the third quarter to finish with a game-high 16 points.

“We came out aggressive in our press, which worked for us when we played them earlier in the tournament at Los Banos,” Lathrop coach Dwayne Davis said. “But incessant fouling caught up to us in the fourth quarter, and we couldn’t have a starter on the floor because of foul trouble. We still committed fouls (on Thursday), but they were more in the flow of the game.”

Porter pumped in all 12 of her points in the first quarter, getting most of them with mid-range jumpers.

“When she first came in, the biggest transition she had to make from junior high to high school is shooting,” Davis said. “We said, you’re not going to just be able to bully your way into the paint all game. We put in a lot of time shooting, and tonight she hit the floor and let it go.”

Lowery put it away in the third quarter when she drained three 3-pointers. Alaba Olaleye contributed with eight points. Shariyah Nance led Pacheco with 10 points.

Lathrop plays three games in four days next week starting with Grace Davis at home on Monday.
