Seniors Andres Hurtado and Jacquelyn Pena Santillan both took ninth individually to lead Lathrop’s boys and girls cross country team to third-place finishes in the Western Athletic Conference opener Wednesday on the 3-mile course at O’Neill Forebay.
Beyer topped both the varsity boys and girls team standings.
Hurtado paced the Lathrop boys in 17 minutes, 35.20 seconds. Riley Gier followed in 10th place in 17:46.20. Fellow senior Caleb Montiel also made the top 20, taking 19th in 18:47.30.
Pena Santillan led the girls team with a time of 21:47.48. Mackenzie Collins finished 10th in 22:02.26. Sophomore Morgan Emery took 15th in 23:13.79, while freshman Suzanna Liu was 19th in 24:03.00.
In the 2.1-mile lower-level races, Lathrop’s Ashley Pantoja is the JV girls winner with a time of 18:33.30. Emily Zukoski spearheaded the Spartans’ runner-up frosh-soph girls with a fifth-place finish in 16:54.13.

Lathrop dominated in all facets in the WAC battle in Modesto.
Quarterback Luz De Luna finished 14-of-22 passing for 284 yards and six touchdowns. She also completed five passes on point-after tries.
One of those pass completions was a 76-yard catch-and-run to Jaleiyah Ray, who finished with 106 yards and two touchdowns on three receptions to go with three carries for 35 yards.
Faith Allen added 115 yards and two scores of her own on five receptions. Melia Lewis added a 15-yard touchdown catch. Tianna Gonzalez also had a TD.
Aaliyah Thompson led the defense with six tackles, two tackles for losses and three sacks. Angelique Gonzalez added two sacks, Dayanna Martinez compiled seven tackles and one sack, and Morgan Hegler and Jaleiyah Ray each had an interception.
Lathrop (2-0 WAC, 7-1 overall) next travels to Ceres on Sept. 16.
