ROUNDUP: Lancers celebrate senior night with volleyball sweep

East Union’s girls volleyball team made quick work of Patterson on its senior night Tuesday at Dalben Center, 25-12, 25-9, 25-21.

The Lancers’ four seniors led the way in the Valley Oak League match.

Setter Lily Grove racked up 21 service points, including five aces. She also added five kills to the attack. Jocelyn Gonzalez contributed four kills, six digs and five points. Shebra Rezaye had four kills, three blocks and three points. Jillian Ramirez pitched in two kills, three aces, six digs and six points.

East Union (3-6, 8-18 overall) ends its season with two games against cross-town rivals starting with a visit to Manteca High on Thursday.

 

Manteca 3, Mountain House 1

The Buffaloes (8-2, 14-8) picked up another big win in their challenging closing stretch of Valley Oak League play, warding off Mountain House (5-5, 10-6) on the road.

Taimane Tu’uga paced Manteca with 19 kills, 18 digs and two aces. Talia Shellbourne (two blocks) and Trinity Todd (three blocks) contributed eight kills apiece, while Saniyah Anthony added seven kills to go with 18 digs and three aces. Gracey Green tallied 23 assists and three aces and split setting duties with Riley Ward, who distributed 11 assists. Ariceli McBroom pitched 14 digs, 11 service points and two aces.

 

FLAG FOOTBALL

East Union 20, Mountain House 0

The Lancers (9-1, 14-5) took care of business at last-place Mountain House and can now shift their focus to Thursday, when they can clinch at outright share of the VOL title.

The defense had five interceptions in the shutout, getting two apiece from Larissa Harries and Sierra Dormer. They each also had four tackles on defense. Avina Harrington also had a pick, and Vanessa Velazquez recorded two sacks.

Julianna Gaspar anchored the offense, completing 23 passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns. She also gained 55 yards on eight rushes.

Caliyah Lopez caught eight of those passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. On defense, she broke up three passes. Harries and Velazquez each caught a TD pass.

East Union faces rival Manteca twice to end the regular season, starting Thursday at the Buffaloes’ Guss Schmiedt Field.

 

 

GIRLS GOLF

Central Valley 316, Lathrop 320

Lathrop narrowly dropped the Western Athletic Conference match at Manteca Park Golf Course.

Central Valley’s senior pair of Elia Hernandez and Emily Mariani was the difference, as they posted the two top scores at 54 and 55, respectively.

Ashley Abon paced the host Spartans with a 58. Kate Albisu contributed a 59, Kriselle Matela a 64, Savanna Quezada a 68 and Evangelina Quezada a 71.

Amirah Harrington’s 4-yard touchdown strike to Miriam Faaaliga was the difference for East Union.

Evelyn Camacho stood out in the defensive battle with five tackles, while Makenzie Dishman, Abigail Guevara, Jordyn Gibbs and Faaaliga each had an interception.

 

Frosh girls volleyball

East Union 2, Patterson 0

Janelle Lopez fired four kills and seven service aces in the Lancers’ 25-17, 25-10 victory.

Teah Galvez added six kills and two aces, while Sophia Quezada had two kills and five aces. Breanna Trevino dished out 10 assists to go with two kills.
