ROUNDUP: Lathrop boys volleyball sweeps Sierra

Western Athletic Conference boys volleyball champion Lathrop ended a solid opening week to its 2020 season on Wednesday, winning at Sierra, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23.
After sweeping Atwater in a Foundation Game on Monday, the Spartans (2-0) marched to Manteca the following night and came away with a four-set victory.
Christian Green spearheaded the balanced front row with six kills. Freshman Jerico Santillan and Kyle Constantino chipped in five kills apiece.
Tory Sumbler dished out 21 assists and collected 11 digs. Diego Sanchez-Castaneda had 23 digs and three assists.

Manteca 3, Chavez 0
The Buffaloes (1-1) took care of the visiting Titans from Stockton 25-15, 25-16, 25-18 for their first win.
They leaned on freshman Camden Steckler to pace the attack with 10 kills, and Alejandro Tornero added six. Sophomore setter Jon Rosas racked up 20 assists.
Defensively, Adrian Gonzales and Gabe Ramirez had seven digs each.

BASEBALL
Ripon 11, Summerville 1 (5)

Devin Bacon and Korbin Hodgson were both 3 for 3 in the mercy-shortened blowout. Bacon drove in three runs, while roped a pair of doubles and plated three runs.
Sean McCann stroked two doubles of his own and finished 2 for 3. Brandon Molthen was also 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Mason Azavedo pitched four of the five innings, striking out six.


SOFTBALL
Lathrop 12, McNair 3

Lylliana Avila led the Spartans (1-2) to their first win of the season, as she pitched a four-hitter and drilled double with a RBI from the plate.
Emma Grisham finished 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Madison Brown (two RBIs) and Teaghen Sharifnejad (two runs) also rapped two hits apiece, while Daisy Balandra legged out a triple and drove in three runs.

JV softball
East Union 10, Modesto 0

MODESTO — Brooke Grabowski and Emily Mendoza combined for the five-inning one-hitter and helped East Union (5-0) remain undefeated.
Kaitlyn Perry was a spark for the offense, reaching in all four of her plate appearances while finishing with four runs plated, two singles and a triple. Michaela Perry went 2 for 2 with a double, and Heighlee Moesher contributed a three-run triple.

Lathrop 17, McNair 5
McKenzi Smith highlighted a 4-for-4 outing with a homer, and Jasmine Smith also laced a round-tripper to end up 3 for 4.
Winning pitcher Amorett Contreras registered seven strikeouts and allowed four hits over five innings.

JV volleyball
Lathrop 2, Sierra 1

The Spartans came back to win 15-25, 25-8, 15-9 behind Javen Ceralde’s five aces and 13 assists. An Nguyen and Connor Giovanni pounded five kills each.

Manteca 2, Chavez 0
Manteca held on for the 25-18, 26-24 victory.
Libero Daniel Pedroza led the way with 14 service points and seven aces. Angel Rosario and Marlon Guardado highlighted the front-row play along with setter Connor Navarro.
