ROUNDUP: Lathrop drops 1st league loss of season

Things just got more interesting in the Western Athletic Conference boys basketball race.

On Wednesday, Lathrop was dealt its first league loss 74-64 by visiting rival Mountain House. The Mustangs (2-0, 7-8) played just their second game after a month-long break from action.

It was a tight game throughout until Mountain House gained some separation with a 20-point fourth quarter. Isaiah Chenier scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the final period for the Mustangs. Thurmond Thorpe contributed 18 points.

Izaias White paced Lathrop (5-1, 8-9) with 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half. Napoleon Reeves added11 points.

The Spartans have another test coming up on Friday when Los Banos visits.

 

BOYS SOCCER

Weston Ranch 2, Kimball 0

With four starters and their head coach out, the Valley Oak League-leading Cougars (6-0-1, 16-3-3) needed a half to get untracked at Don Nichelson Stadium.

Zinedine Valdez came through with goals in the 55th and 71st minutes. He was assisted by Angel Zapata and Aaron Silva. Goalkeeper Marcos Arriaza had three saves in the shutout.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Weston Ranch 59, Sierra 56

The Timberwolves (2-2 VOL, 5-7 overall) trailed 15-8 after the first quarter, and host Weston Ranch (1-2, 5-8) held on for its first league win of the season.

Brianna Parker spearheaded Sierra with 16 points, Olivia Werner tallied 14 and Grace Langenfeld had eight.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Ripon 8, Escalon 1

The Indians (6-0, 17-3 overall) dominated the Trans-Valley League match on Tuesday, outshooting Escalon, 26-3.

Olivia Maragos led the way with two goals and an assist. Natalie Johnson also scored twice, while Kaitlyn Espinola and Jaydin Kroutil each contributed a goal and an assist. Maddie Winter had two assists.

Grace Garza and Katie Martin added a goal apiece. Ines Rodriguez, Gabbi Ilardi and Ari Daniels had one assist each.

 

Lathrop 4, Pacheco 0

Ary Jones accounted for all four goals as Lathrop evened its WAC record to 5-5 (7-10-1 overall).

Isa Paniagua assisted two of them, while Brianna Garcia and Jasmin Soto each had one assist.
