TURLOCK — Manteca’s girls’ basketball team knocked off defending champion Sonora 67-51 in the first round of the Pitman Holiday Classic on Thursday.
It was the second meeting between these old Valley Oak League rivals this season, with the Buffaloes also winning the first time around, 56-36.
“Good first game back,” Manteca coach Ryan Bono said. “We were a little slow on our defensive priorities in the first quarter but picked it up as the game went along.”
The Buffaloes (9-3) staked a 19-15 lead by the end of the first quarter but locked the Sonora Wildcats (5-7) down from there). Kyaira Jacobs spearheaded their balanced scoring with 17 points. Jayda Jackson (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Paige Peterson (10 points, 10 rebounds) each had double-doubles. Jaslyn Woods contributed 12 points.
