Buffaloes’ volleyball team edges reigning VOL champion in five sets

Manteca’s girls tennis team wrapped up the first week of Valley Oak League play Thursday with a 7-2 win at Sierra.

Haile Kim continued an impressive start to her high school career with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Sasha Martin at No. 1 singles. No. 2 Shreya Raman downed Mikayla Villalobos 6-1, 6-0; No. 3 Saihaj Ghuman defeated Ruth Beedi 6-1, 6-3; No. 4 Paisley Coenenberg dispatched Evelin Garcia 6-2, 6-0; No. 5 Rae Limbago beat Xitali Gonzales 6-0, 6-2; and No. 6 Ekam Ghuman took care of Anjana Barath, 6-0, 6-2.

Manteca also won at No. 1 doubles, as Alyson Alvarado and Delialah Sanchez Torres knocked off Amara Kenechukwu and Sadie Herrera, 6-1, 6-3.

Sierra (1-1, 1-2) got its lone wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. The No. 2 duo of Janessa Felix and Bhavika Karthikevan swept Caitlyn Vu and Ryan Gomes, 6-1, 6-2 Melissa Castillo and Mia Soza won No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-2 against Danna Padilla and Emma Furtado.

Manteca (2-0, 7-3-1 overall) can now shift its focus on reigning champion Mountain House. The two face off next Tuesday, Sept. 16 at Mountain House, while Sierra heads to East Union.

 

GIRLS GOLF

Valley Oak League

East Union led area schools at Manteca Park Golf Course during the first VOL tournament of the season, netting runner-up 522 behind Arianna Pale’s 88.

Oakdale topped the field with a 452 and was led by low medalist Bella Cortes’ 5-over-par 77. Manteca was third with a 545 and followed by Mountain House (582), Sierra (624) and Patterson (645).

Jessica Ingalls (91), Kaylee Brown (105), Alizae Farias (111) and Kandance Hebert (127) were other scoring contributors for East Union.

Manteca’s Emily Camara placed third individually with an 86. She was joined by Clare Crook (110), Layla Flannigan (110), Aleisa Harris (115) and Rebecca Navarro (124).

Sierra’s scorers were Emma Basile (108), Noah Ingua (108), Alyssa Suarez (111), Ella Williamson (140) and Pragya Tyagi (157).

 

Ripon 151, Escalon 175

Ripon sophomore Cameron Seefeldt was low medalist with a 7-over 35 in the Trans Valley League dual match at River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres.

She held off teammate Grace Ortmann, who finished one stroke back. Brynn Daley added a 48, and Eve Toledo rounded out the Indians’ score with a 42.

Elizabeth Allan led Escalon with a 40.

 

Livingston 236, Lathrop 270

The Spartans dropped the Western Athletic Conference match at Rancho Del Rey Golf Club in Atwater.

They were headed by Kate Albisu (63), Ashley Abon (64) and Kriselle Matela (66). Savanna Quezada (77) and Shelby Jauregui (78) capped Lathrop’s score.

Low medalist Brianna Sobrevilla carted a 43 for Livingston.

 

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Manteca 3, Central Catholic 2

The Buffaloes (3-0, 6-4 overall) eked out the 25-15, 25-22, 19-25, 18-25, 18-16 at home, snapping an eight-match skid against the reigning VOL champion Raiders (2-1, 4-8).

Trinity Todd anchored the Manteca front row with 15 kills and 11 blocks. Anthony Saniyah added 10 kills, two blocks and 21 digs. Talia Shelbourne also blasted 10 kills to go with three blocks.

Setter Riley Ward orchestrated the attack, collecting 38 assists, two kills, two aces and seven digs. Peyton McDonald amassed 21 digs, and Ariceli McBroom tallied five kills and 15 digs.

 

Hughson 3, Ripon Christian 2

The Knights (1-1, 7-3) have a tough stretch to start the competitive TVL schedule.

After escaping Hilmar with a four-set win in their opener, they went back on the road Thursday and stumbled, 25-14, 21-25, 25-18, 21-25, 4-15.

Paige Van Hofwegen led RC with 14 kills and 18 digs. Alanna Blanco produced 40 assists and 19 digs. Morgan Schenk contributed 11 kills and four service aces. Brynn Bohn pitched in with three blocks and five aces.

It doesn’t get any easier for Ripon Christian, which takes on defending league and Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV champion Ripon next Thursday, Sept. 18. The Knights will get a chance to prepare for that big match with a non-league tilt Tuesday against visiting Fresno Christian.

 

FLAG FOOTBALL

East Union 39, Mountain House 0

Elliana Flores racked up 77 yards and a touchdown from scrimmage on 13 touches, while adding a pick-six on defense.

Caliyah Lopez also highlighted the defense with an interception return for a touchdown. The Lancers (2-0 VOL, 7-3 overall) intercepted five passes in all, two coming from Avina Harrington and another from Vanessa Velazquez.

Quarterback Julianna Gaspar threw for 93 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown. Sierra Dormer chimed in with a receiving TD and a rushing TD. Harrington added a touchdown catch of her own.

 

Frosh girls volleyball

Manteca 2, Central Catholic 0

The Buffaloes rolled to the 25-20, 25-17 victory.

Natalia Ramirez led the attack with nine assists and two aces. Amya Baptist registered 11 service points, four of which went for aces. Giuliana Israel chipped in 10 digs, three service points and a kill.
