ROUNDUP: Manteca nets pivotal tennis win over Sierra

Manteca’s boys tennis team picked up an important win Tuesday at Manteca Tennis Center, edging out Sierra 5-4 in a Valley Oak League match with postseason implications.

The top three teams in league qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, and the Buffaloes are currently in third place with a 6-2 record.

Manteca swept through the first five singles, which was enough for the win. Jonas Mueller (6-0, 6-0), Yok Chai Ma (6-1, 6-1), Emiliano Hurtado (6-1, 6-0), Ivan Barajas (6-1, 6-1) and Michael Osanna (6-3, 6-1) were the victors.

Manteca did not field a third doubles team, surrendering a point at the outset. The rest of the matches went to a third set.

At No. 6 singles, Sierra’s Ian Trconic squeaked past Alexander Chatham, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. Darrin Riojas and Hasnain Ali won the No. 1 doubles match 6-7 (3), 7-6 (8), 10-5 over Landon Butler and Michael Levchenko. Santiago Franco and Lucas Dimas beat Vincent Almeida and Gilbert Troche 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 at No. 2 doubles.

 

Oakdale 9, East Union 0

The Mustangs won all seven matches, 6-0, 6-0. East Union forfeited at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.

 

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Sierra 3, Weston Ranch 0

The Timberwolves (3-0, 6-4 overall) rolled to a 25-13, 25-21, 25-22 win to remain in a first-place tie in the VOL.

Brian Huynh spearheaded Sierra’s balanced attack with five kills, nine assists and three aces. Noel Ruezga contributed four kills and seven assists.

Santino Flores (four kills, three aces), Ajay Grewal (four kills, two digs), Arshdeep Dhaliwal (five kills, five blocks) and David Caamano (four kills) also keyed the win.

 

BASEBALL

Lathrop 7, Grace Davis 1

Jasper Tover struck out nine in a four-hitter in Modesto, as Lathrop improved to 4-4 in the Western Athletic Conference and 6-6 overall.

Lathrop plated all of its runs in the third and fourth innings. Jeremiah Estante (double, run) and Nathan Martinez (run, two RBIs) both went 2 for 3. Adrian Zuniga hit a double, drove in two runs and scored two. Alyuss Duenez also had two RBIs.
