ROUNDUP: Ripon girls soccer coasts to 1st-round win

Olivia Maragos’ three-goal spree powered second-seeded Ripon to a breezy 4-1 victory over visiting Livingston in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV girls soccer playoffs Friday.

Jordyn Meeuwse and Starla Skiles assisted her first two goals in the third and 24th minutes. Maragos completed the hat trick on a breakaway in the 44th minute.

The No. 15 Wolves (9-12-4) got on board in the 60th minute, but Ripon (17-4-1) ended any hopes of a miracle comeback with Sofia Cabello’s goal off a through pass from Rylee Agbayani.

Starting goalkeeper Ellena Parenti Gomez did not take a shot on frame. Reserve Kylie Wiggins had one save.

The Indians face No. 10 El Camino (8-2-7) in the quarterfinals next Tuesday back at Wes Stouffer Field. The Golden Empire League runner-up upset No. 7 Oakmont, 1-0.


BOYS BASKETBALL

Ripon Christian 70, Sonora 68 (OT)

The Trans-Valley League champion Knights (11-1, 22-5 overall) are bound for the postseason with a nine-game winning streak that was in danger of ending at Bud Castle Gym.

In a game with wild swings in the second half, Jake Vander Veen was able to force the overtime period with a tough layup in the final seconds of regulation. Ripon Christian regained control of the game in overtime and held on for the win. Ripon Christian led 59-50 at one point in the fourth quarter after going on a 24-4 run.

Vander Veen finished with a game-high 24 points and five assists. Amos Cady scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half, adding five rebounds, five assists and three steals. E.J. Bruno contributed 10 points and eight rebounds. Walker Postma had six points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Chase Bunnell chipped in with eight points.

Jonathan Curran and Noah Wright paced Sonora (8-4, 17-11) with 17 and 16 points, respectively.


Ripon 58, Hilmar 50

TVL runner-up Ripon (9-3, 17-11) overcame a slow start on senior night, as Marcus Madoski dominated with 32 points. Fellow senior Logan Lefebvre scored 11 points, while Andrew Shaw knocked down three 3s for his nine points.

Hilmar (3-0, 8-19) was headed by Xavier Silveira’s 18 points.
