Ripon has the Trans-Valley League girls basketball title to itself after bursting past Hilmar on the road 31-24 Thursday in a regular-season finale.
The game was tied at 19-19 after the third quarter, but the Indians (11-1 TVL, 18-10 overall) outscored Hilmar 12-5 in the fourth, getting two big buckets and a pair of free throws from sophomore guard Kaylee Lehmkuhl. She led all scorers with 13 points. Ana Hernandez added six points.
Upset minded Hilmar (3-9, 5-19) led 6-1 after a quarter of play. Lehmkuhl helped jump start the Indians with a 3-pointer, and Hernandez scored four of her points in the period.
Emma Gomes scored 12 points for the Yellowjackets.
Ripon came into the game with at least a share of the title in hand, holding a one-game lead over Escalon. The last time the Indians claimed an outright championship was in 2018. They were co-champions with Livingston in 2020.
Ripon will find out its postseason position Saturday when the Sac-Joaquin Section releases brackets.
Lathrop 58, Beyer 50
If this is the last game of the season for the Spartans (7-7, 14-14 overall), that will be alright with coach Dwayne Davis.
They saved their biggest win for the last day of Western Athletic Conference play, though it may not be enough to catapult them into the playoffs for what would be a ninth straight season. Lathrop entered the contest out of the running for one of three automatic berths, and its only hope was to crack the top 15 in the MaxPreps Sac-Joaquin Section Division III rankings. The Spartans sat at the 16th spot, and the teams ahead of them are unlikely to slip.
“I don’t know if it gets us in into the playoff field, but this run in the second half of the season was perfect to what we’ve been teaching all year.”
Lathrop won its final four contests, capping it with an upset over the playoff-bound Patriots (9-5, 16-10). Beyer led 22-12 at the end of the fourth quarter, but the Spartans locked down defensively from there, outscoring the visitor 17-6 in the final period.
Shakara Porter stood out with 22 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Jaleiyah Ray contributed 14 points and four boards. Faith Allen (five steals) and Audrina Fisher each scored seven points.
BOYS SOCCER
El Dorado 3, Ripon 2 (2OT)
In Placerville, the 17th-seeded Indians (11-12-4) dropped the SJS Division IV play-in game in heartbreaking fashion, giving up the tying goal in the final minutes of regulation before No. 16 El Dorado (11-9-2) buried the winner in overtime.
Alan Aguirre and Isaac Ramos scored for Ripon, which had two one-goal leads. It was the first postseason match for the Indians in 10 years.
The Cougars travel to top-seeded Woodland (16-1-2) today.
