ROUNDUP: Sierra nets competitive tennis win over Manteca

 Sierra’s boys tennis team pulled out three competitive singles matches for a 7-2 Valley Oak League win over Manteca on Tuesday.

Ashton Hillard and Sparsh Beedi needed third sets to tilt the Nos. 2 and 5 singles matches in the Timberwolves’ favor. Hillard battled back to defeat Miguel Amo, 4-6, 7-6, 10-2. Beedi also dropped his opening set before rolling past Declan Edwards, 6-7, 6-2, 10-5.

No. 4 Santiago Franco also picked up a pivotal point for the Sierra (4-1 VOL, 5-2 overall) with his 6-4, 7-5 victory against Michael Levchenko. Ryan Alves held on to dispatch Landon Butler in two sets in No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-4.

Reigning league singles champion Yok Chai Ma accounted for one of the two wins for the Buffaloes (2-2, 2-3), who were the “hosts” at Sierra. Ma knocked off two-time runner-up Brady Alves in the No. 1 singles match, 7-5, 6-2.

Winning at No. 3 for Manteca was Vince Almeida, who fended off Oliver Naven, 7-6, 6-4.

The Timberwolves were dominant in doubles play. Their top tandem of Hasnain Ali and Harshith Kumar downed Steven Sarmiento and Isiah DeVega, 6-1, 6-0. Sid Gopendran and Zain Ali won at No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-1 against Dominick Esquivel and Isaiah DeVega. Alex Rey Rosario and Noah Brum swept the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-3 against Justin Joseph and Shabhum Sareen.

Sierra travels to Oakdale for a big match today, while Manteca takes on East Union.


COED TENNIS

Ripon 9, Sonora 0

The Indians took care of business against visiting Sonora in Trans-Valley League play.

Two doubles matches were decided in third sets. At No. 2 doubles, Davis Rodriguez and Nate Denhart edged out Bradley Rato and Kyle Milnik, 6-0, 4-6, 10-7. Emiley Wang and John Yeung prevailed at mixed doubles 6-1, 3-6, 10-7 against Fernanda Laurenzano and Carter Riley.

Tate Douglas (6-0, 6-2) and Matthew Tharakan (6-4, 6-2) swept at Nos. 1 and 2 boys singles. Brookelyn Betschart (6-4, 6-2) and Lily Meyer (6-0, 6-0) won the girls singles matches.

Max Ferral and Emilio Machado Perez made quick work of their opponents at No. 1 boys doubles, 6-0, 6-1. Sophie Douglas and Alyssa Lan warded off Leyla Vang and Emma Flake to win the No. 1 girls doubles showdown, 7-5, 6-2. Molly Berger and Abby Douglas prevailed at No. 2 girls doubles, 6-4, 6-2.


BASEBALL

Ceres 12, Lathrop 0 (6)

Lathrop (2-1, 4-7 overall) suffered its first Western Athletic Conference loss of the season, as the visiting Bulldogs (3-0, 9-3) broke out for 10 runs in the final three innings to trigger the mercy rule.

Ceres did it with just five total hits, while aided by 10 walks four hit batters and five errors.

Freshman Vaughn Sanchez accounted for two of the Spartans’ four hits. Vincent Castrejon collected six strikeouts against just one walk for Ceres.
