ROUNDUP: Sierra volleyball tops Cougars to end league skid

STOCKTON — The Sierra High girls volleyball team avenged one of its previous defeats while ending its Valley Oak League losing skid Thursday 25-13, 25-15, 21-25, 25-21 against Weston Ranch.
The Timberwolves (1-7, 3-11 overall) went into the match having lost 37 straight in league, according to MaxPreps. Their last win came against Weston Ranch on Oct. 27, 2015. The Cougars (1-8, 11-10) swept their previous meeting, 28-26, 25-23, 25-22.
Teresa Benham anchored Sierra in the rematch, producing 12 kills and 27 digs. Ashlee Matteroli contributed 25 assists, 20 digs, seven kills and four aces. Dulce Cruz added six kills and two blocks, Savannah Guzman racked up 15 service points and Sophia Schmiedt served five aces to go with 13 digs.

Ripon Christian 3, Mariposa 0
MARIPOSA — The Knights (9-1, 14-7) held off a spirited effort from Mariposa (4-6, 7-11) to win the Southern League matchup, 25-15, 25-18, 25-20.
They’ll next host Le Grand Tuesday for a first-place battle.
“The girls played amazing, well-rounded volleyball,” Ripon Christian coach Jocelyn Benziger said. “Mariposa found themselves taking a lead a few times and the girls stayed the course and worked tougher, snagging a well-fought win.”
Makenzie Miller led the Knights with eight kills, four digs and five aces. Megan Bos (two aces) and Morgan Van Enderen (eight assists) rapped four kills apiece.
Taylor Anema came up with three blocks, Taylor Alger handed out 12 assists and Lauren Braga and Charlotte te Velde collected four digs each.

Lathrop 3, Grace Davis 0
MODESTO — The Western Athletic Conference co-leading Spartans (10-1, 13-4) ended strong in the 25-22, 25-17, 25-6 sweep.
Jahsita Fa’alii slugged 22 kills while adding three aces and six digs. Avleen Kaur chipped in eight kills to the attack. Karina Chavez distributed 31 assists, Krystal Tempra had 12 digs and Hailey Hunter contributed nine digs and three aces.

GIRLS TENNIS
Kimball 9, East Union 0
TRACY — Isabel Moreno put forth a valiant effort for East Union, dropping the No. 1 singles match 3-6, 4-6 to Maxine Jaque.
Nadia Cardona dropped the No. 2 singles match 2-6, 3-6, while No. 5 Savannah Hudson threatened to extend her match in a 1-6, 4-6 defeat. The host Jaguars dominated the rest, losing just total six games.

JV volleyball
Mariposa 2, Ripon Christian 0
MARIPOSA — Ripon Christian (8-2, SL, 13-8 overall) came up short in a well-contested 24-26, 23-25 defeat. Mariposa was also 8-1 going in.
Adrianna Arias and Natasha Smith swatted six kills each to lead the attack. Jenna Hoffman dished out seven assists, and Sarah Brown ended with 15 digs.

Lathrop 2, Grace Davis 0
MODESTO — Lathrop (11-0, 15-3) has moved closer to a WAC championship after defeating Grace Davis, 25-22, 25-15.
Ke’mya Barnett highlighted the win with 11 kills. Anahy Serrano registered 21 assists and five digs. Desiree Ambatali finished with 10 digs and three aces, while Sydney Hanks hammered six kills.

Oakdale 2, East Union 0
OAKDALE — The Lancers came up short in the VOL contest, 21-25, 22-25.
Julieanna Padilla paced East Union with four kills. Dannielle James had four assists and three aces. Isabella Price contributed two kills and two aces. Emma Valdez and Amalia Lopez picked up four digs each.

Lathrop 2, Grace Davis 1
MODESTO — Lylliana Avila amassed 10 service aces and four kills to help Lathrop (5-4 WAC, 6-8 overall) squeak out a 24-26, 25-17, 15-13 victory.
Amorett Contreras aided the cause with 15 assists and four digs. Layla Pereira-Watson added three kills and an ace.
