ROUNDUP: Singles players lift Manteca girls tennis to win over Sierra

The Manteca girls tennis team dominated five singles matches, which was enough to overcome Sierra 5-4 in a Valley Oak League contest on Monday.

The Buffaloes (5-1 VOL, 10-4-1 overall) were highlighted by Hailie Kim and Shreya Raman, who swept the Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches 6-0, 6-0 against Sasha Martin and Mikayla Villalobos, respectively. No. 5 Rae Limbago won by the same score against Evelin Garcia.  

No. 3 Saihaj Ghuman downed Ruth Beedi 6-1, and No. 4 Paisley Coenenberg took care of Munveer Dosanjh, 6-0, 6-3.

Xitali Gonzalez earned Sierra’s lone singles win, knocking off Ekam Ghuman at No. 6, 6-4, 6-4.

It was all Timberwolves (2-5, 2-6) in doubles play.

Their top tandem of Sadie Herrera and Amara Kenechukwu rolled 6-2, 6-2 against Delialah Sanchez Torres and Caitlynn Vu. Janessa Felix and Bhavika Karthikeyan defeated Zoey Pratt and Annabela Lopez in the No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-1. The No. 3 duo of Melissa Castillo and Mia Soza cruised past Emma Furtado and Natalia Perez, 6-1, 6-0.

 

FLAG FOOTBALL

Lathrop 32, Beyer 13

The Western Athletic Conference-leading Spartans (5-1, 11-2 overall) dominated in their long-awaited home opener.

Luz De Luna passed for five touchdowns and a point-after try, finishing 14-of-17 for 188 yards. Jaleiyah Ray was on the receiving end of three of those touchdowns, which went for 7, 25 and 29 yards. She totaled 170 yards from scrimmage on 12 touches, five of them on rushing attempts.

Faith Allen and Aaliyah Thompson each contributed 26 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Faith Butler and Dayanna Martinez anchored the defense with nine tackles apiece. Three of Butler’s flag pulls were for losses. Angelique Gonzalez chipped in two sacks.

 

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Lathrop 3, Beyer 0

The Spartans (7-0, 10-5) wrapped up the first half of their WAC schedule in Modesto with the 25-21, 25-21, 25-17 sweep.

Erin Chunn rapped out nine kills, and Siliana Fa’ataualofa accumulated nine kills, eight digs and two aces. Kira Davis contributed three kills and four blocks. Breana Wiseman pitched in two kills and two blocks, while Justine Mabutas collected seven digs and four assists.

Yellowjacket Invitational

Ripon placed third at Turlock Golf & Country Club, scoring a 389 behind tourney champion Oakdale (331) and host Hilmar (389).

Cameron Seefeldt paced the Indians’ scorers with an 86. She was followed by Grace Ortmann (100), Eve Toledo (100) and Cailyn Young (103).

 

Lathrop 333, Grace Davis 380

Low medalist Ashley Abon shot a 53 on the Manteca Park Golf Course front night to lead Lathrop in the WAC dual match.

Runner-up Kate Albisu added a 66, and Kriselle Matela a 68. Janeese Romo and Shelby Jauregui rounded out scoring with a 71 and 75, respectively.

Lathrop 2, Beyer 0

Lathrop coasted to the 25-14, 25-14 sweep.

Audrina Fisher headed the attack with 12 kills, and Alexza Bringas distributed 11 assists.

Andrea Lemus (three kills, three aces), Irshbir Bisla (two kills, two aces, two assists), Cassidy Fa’ali’I (six assists, three digs), Lilyana Murillo (four digs) and Melodee Contreras (three digs) also contributed to the win.

Lathrop 26, Beyer 20

Lathrop had four different touchdown scorers.

Madilynn Narungaray hit paydirt with a 55-yard run. Ailyn Alcaraz scored on a 9-yard scamper. Marianna Coon and Genavee Dasalla-Gascon caught passes of 15 and 9 yards for touchdowns, respectively, from Aviahna Calderon (9-of-14, 69 yards).

Jaqueline Avalos highlighted the defense with two sacks, and Ayelli Amezcua contributed one. Arlette Quiroz racked up four tackles, and Kathryn Guerrero had an interception.

 

Frosh girls volleyball

Lathrop 2, Beyer 0

The Spartans pulled out the hard-earned 27-25, 27-25 sweep behind Zakia Booker’s nine aces.

Ne’Myah Belion contributed seven aces. Ariannah Sheel led the defense with seven digs. Kayden Henry handed out three assists.
