ROUNDUP: VOL flag football race heats up after EU knocks off CC

The East Union flag football team shook up the top of the Valley Oak League standings with its 27-7 win at Central Catholic on Tuesday.  

The result has created logjam, as Central Catholic (4-1, 12-6) was unable to separate from the Lancers (3-1, 8-5), Manteca and Sierra, which stunned EU in a fourth-quarter comeback last week.

Caliyah Lopez had a stellar two-way performance, corralling 11 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown, while contributing to the defense with four tackles, an interception and a pass deflection.

Quarterback Julianna Gaspar erupted for 245 yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-26 passing. She also rushed five times for 45 yards and a TD. Sixty-six of those passing yards came on a touchdown connection with Lopez.

Ava Barrera and Elii Flores scored a touchdown apiece. Sierra Dormer, Larissa Harries and Lopez each chipped in a point-after conversion. Makayla Burlingame highlighted the defense with four sacks and two tackles.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

Manteca 7, Central Catholic 2

The Buffaloes (4-1 VOL, 8-5-1 overall) took care of business, as Hailie Kim, Shreya Raman, Saihaj Ghuman, Paisley Coenenberg and Rae Limbago and Ekam Ghuman swept their singles match.

Danna Padilla and Natalia Perez handled their business from the No. 3 doubles spot, rolling to a 6-4, 6-1 triumph.

 

Oakdale 7, Sierra 2

Xitali Gonzalez won at No. 6 singles for Sierra 6-3, 6-3 over Zoe Byron.

The Timberwolves’ other win came at No. 1 doubles, as Amara Kenechukwu and Sadie Herrera outlasted Isabella Victoria and Audrey Clark, 6-3, 3-6, 2-10,

 

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Ripon Christian 3, Escalon 0

The Knights (2-2, 10-7 overall) picked up a needed Trans Valley League victory, 25-14, 25-22, 25-20.

They were headed by setter Alanna Blacno’s 29 assists and six aces. Paige Hofwegen put away 10 kills, while Morgan Schenk and Alyssa Hofman pitched in eight and seven, respectively.

The defense was anchored by Tatum Sonke’s 10 digs and Haley Kootstra’s two blocks.

Ripon Christian won the JV and freshman matches.
