The Valley Foothill League’s end of season golf tournament was the final opportunity for players to try to extend their seasons, and Ripon Christian’s Jennie Wickham as well as the Ripon High team did just that, earning a spot in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V tournament with a strong showing Monday.
Ripon punched its ticket to the SJS Division-V tournament by finishing in third place overall in the seven-team tournament, finishing with a score of 456 behind eventual champion Escalon who shot an impressive 405.
“I just wanted our girls to play as solid as possible,” Ripon head coach Eric Dambrosio said. “We sat on the range before we even teed off and made them hit 30 three-footers. I made them putt and putt and putt, because I knew everybody would struggle with their long game, so we emphasized the short game.”
The Indians were led by sophomore Haylee Fannin, who turned in the lowest round of either Ripon school with a 100. Teammate Sam Conway came in behind her with a 107, followed by Sienna Starck (110) and Destinae Franco (139).
Ripon Christian’s Wickham prolonged her season, pulling in one of six at-large berths going to the top-6 scores of players who were not on one of the three advancing teams. Wickham finished the course in 118 strokes, leading her Ripon Christian teammates and giving the Knights something to cheer about when the advancing singles were announced.
“We have been very pleased with the way Jennie has been golfing all year,” Ripon Christian head coach Lynette Vos said. “It is really exciting to have one of our players go on to the next level.
“She has been consistently improving all year.”
Wickham’s round was not nearly one of her best on the season, yet scoring under the pressure of extending her season has given the Knight another round to play.
“I was pretty happy to move on,” Wickham said. “I didn’t do my best today, but it was good enough to move on so I’m happy.
“I wasn’t able to hit my drives straight, so I think I’ll do a lot better at sections.”
Fannin’s round left her some room for improvement as well, but the Indians young standout knows exactly where she needs to improve to watch her score sink at the next level.
“My drives were straight for me all day, it was just my fairway shots that hurt my round,” Fannin said. “I was chunking them all day. I played this course this weekend so I know I can play it better than I did today.
“I am kind of disappointed, but I’m happy at the same time.”
The SJS Division-V tournament will be held Monday at Dry Creek Ranch Golf Club in Galt. The top teams and individual players from nine different leagues will commence in hopes of earning a berth to the SJS Masters Tournament at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton Nov. 1.
