Sierra blasts Escalon in final tune-up

The Sierra High Timberwolves closed out non-league play Thursday by accomplishing many of their objectives.

For starters, they beat visiting Escalon rather handily, 7-0.

Nicholas Gonzalez, Erick Noriega, Jaime Rivera led the way by tallying two goals each. Henry Diaz added the other score.

Sierra jumped out to a 4-0 first-half advantage.

“We had trouble (during the preseason) holding leads,” Timberwolves co-coach Brett Parham said. “It was satisfying that we kept up our intensity during the second half.”

Sierra’s game plan was to control the ball.

“We did a good job possessing the ball and keeping it away from Escalon,” Parham said.

On defensive side, he praised the play of Anis Guedoir and Rigoberto Gomez for anchoring the middle. All three of Sierra’s goal keepers – namely, Manuel Garcia, Julian Semenza and David Victor – also held their own in preserving the shutout.

“We used every one of our players today,” Parham added.

His starters, however, played the bulk of the first half in preparation for Tuesday’s Valley Oak League opener against Oakdale at Daniel M. Teicheira Memorial Stadium.

Earlier, the Timberwolves beat Escalon in the junior varsity contest, 4-1.
