The Timberwolves will play Enochs today for the championship of the Robert Dominik Fuchs Memorial Holiday Classic.
Tip-off is 4:30 p.m. at Colombia College in Sonora.
The Sierra High boys varsity basketball squad reached the title game by scrapping out a 46-45 win over Summerville on Wednesday.
“It was one of those grind out games,” Timberwolves coach Scott Thomason said.
His team trailed 12-8 after the first period, and was down 21-19 at the intermission.
Sierra (8-3) forged ahead late in the game, with Summerville (9-1) having a chance to tie in the waning seconds, but missing the crucial free throw.
Offensively, the Timberwolves were paced by Will Ward, who netted 15 points. Sophomore guard Guillermo Nunez chipped in with 12.
Against Tracy, East Union High overcame a 20-point deficit while eking out a 61-57 victory in the fifth annual event.
“They came out hot while we played lackadaisical,” said Lancer coach Brett Lewis. “It was an ugly win, but we’ll take it.”
T. J. Williams led the charge for the Bulldogs, scoring 21 of his game-high 25 points in the first half. He also delivered on a pair of treys in the first period.
“I think they hit on four 3-pointers in the quarter,” Lewis added.
Besides Williams, Hugo Levy and Derrick Smith also connected from behind the arc as Tracy jumped out to a 26-13 advantage.
East Union (6-5) fought back, chipping away at the lead until the 3:31 mark in the final period.
That’s when Teejay Gordon was fouled while connecting on a shot. He completed the three-point play, tying the game at 53-53.
Seconds later, the Lancers went ahead when Gordon hit both technical foul free throws. The Tracy ball-handler was called for slamming the ball apparently in frustration after a turnover at midcourt.
East Union was 13 of 18 from the free throw line.
Jordan Kron, who, along with Gordon, both finished with 18 points, added to the Lancers’ lead, scoring on a strong drive to the basket. He and Robert Vaughn executed on a give-and-go play to make it 59-55 in the final minute.
Vaughn had 7 and Wayne Cheung chipped in with 12.
Tracy kept it close on Williams’ put-back basket with 30.8 seconds. The Bulldogs had one last chance with two ticks left, but the inbound pass struck the rafters of the gym, resulting in a turnover.
Kron, who was quickly fouled, iced the game by sinking both free throws.
“A close game like this is good experience as we enter into league,” Lewis said.
