Sierra girls claim Gebhardt crown

Jadyn Shinn blasted two second-half goals Saturday to lead tournament-host Sierra to a 2-0 win over Vacaville in the championship contest of the Vern Gebhardt Soccer Tournament at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium.

Shinn was assisted by Kyndra Kiser and Minty Doyle. 

The Timberwolves (7-1) outshot the Bulldogs (4-2) 13-8 and Sierra goalie Callie Crain made four saves for her fifth shutout of the season. 

Crain was named top goalie of the tournament and Shinn had the most goals in the two-day affair with seven. 

“Our defense played well throughout the tournament,” Sierra coach Manuel Pires said. “Vacaville was a very good team and this was a good game.”

The Timberwolves downed El Capitan 4-2 in the semifinals.

Shinn had two goals against the Gauchos (2-1) with Kiser and Doyle (two assists) each getting a goal. Crain made four saves in six shots on goal. Sierra took 21 shots.

East Union 4, Gustine 0

The Lancers (4-2) used a balanced attack to beat the Reds (3-3) to wrap up the tournament Saturday at Manteca High.

Julia Vigallon, Britney Moneyhun, Mariana Huizar, Samantha Snyder each had a goal for East Union.

Riverbank 0

For the second time in a week the Lancers blanked the Bruins (0-7).

Huizar led East Union with two goals. Snyder, Marlene Lopez, Kaylee Benguerel and Moneyhun added a goal apiece.
