It was just another day, another victory for Sierra High’s reigning Valley Oak League champion girls team.
It was more of a test for the boys, one that coach Dave Breitenbucher said was passed with flying colors despite the heartbreaking 83-81 loss to visiting Ceres Friday. The girls won handily, 135-35.
“Our boys team is undermanned — we just don’t have the numbers that we did last year,” Breitenbucher said. “But they hung tough with a very good Ceres team and lost the relay, and we shouldn’t have been close to that.
“The guys responded and did very well.”
It came down to the 400-meter freestyle relay, which Ceres won by a 41-second margin.
Josh Revives and Zach Holmstrom put forth impressive individual efforts to keep the Timberwolves (2-2, 4-2-1 overall) close. Revives won the 100 butterfly and 100 back stroke, while Holmstrom placed first in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Both were on the winning 200 free relay team.
The undefeated Timberwolf girls contingent notched first-place points in every event and swept the 50 free, 100 free, 100 back, 100 breast and 400 free relay.
Recording first-place finishes were Niki George (200 free), Madison Andermahr (200 IM), Ariel Moreno (50 free, 100 free), Christina Ngo (100 fly), Megan Viduya (500 free), Ashley Burns (100 back) and Kara Hall (100 breast).
“The team had a discussion prior to the meet, and we talked about executing, and everyone from all levels — boys and girls, varsity and junior varsity — did that.”
Sierra continues dual action next week against Central Valley Tuesday and Manteca at home Friday.
Manteca (3-1, 3-2) also got first-place contributions from Michael Guillory (50 free), Kevin Craighead (500 free) and Alex Cordaway (100 back).
Davina Bennett spearheaded the girls (3-1, 4-1), claiming the 50 free and 100 breast and was a part of the winning 200 free relay quartet.
Holly Whipple (500 free) and Lyndsey Silva (100 back) chipped in first-place points.
