With all other Valley Oak League tennis matches washing out Thursday, Sierra High took the opportunity to make a splash against a team that’s in position to qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

The Timberwolves continued their recent hot streak at Oakdale, winning 5-4 behind their singles players. Sierra (6-4) has won five straight to vault itself into postseason contention and broke up a three-way tie for second place that involved Oakdale, Manteca and Kimball.

Providing the clinching point was Maddie Banks in the No. 6 singles match. She edged Kaekidan Curtis in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Kelly Fuentes also won in three, besting Oakdale No. 5 Emily Johnson, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Sierra’s top singles player, Vannida Nguyen, continued her march for an undefeated season with a one-sided 6-1, 6-0 victory. Also winning for the Timberwolves were No. 3 Anna Cardenas (6-2, 6-3) and No. 4 Naomi Nunis (6-1, 6-2).

Sierra next hosts undefeated Weston Ranch on Tuesday.

Manteca’s match with Lathrop was rescheduled for Monday, and Weston Ranch was set to face off with Sonora at home Thursday.
