Sierra keeps climbing to advance to section

The Sierra High cross country program continued to impress during the 2010 season, putting together a flawless showing at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-III Cross Country Sub-Section Meet, to move on to the upcoming Section Meet Saturday.

The Sierra girls varsity team finished the meet with a third-place team finish, trailing just Vista del Lago (33) and Placer (66) in the meet with a total of 175. Francis Scherry was Sierra’s No. 1 finisher, closing with a time of 21:00 for a 15th overall finish.

Scherry was the only Valley Oak League runner other than Sonora’s Samantha Smith to finish in the top-20.

Teammate Kelly Paredes (21:25), Katelyn Carbiener (21:31), Patricia Angel (22:08), Jessica Montiel (23:38) followed Scherry, with both Nicole England and Amber Parker rounding out the Timberwolves’ top-7 finishers.

East Union ‘s varsity girls finished as the No. 17 team, with only the top-10 teams advancing. Freshman Claudia Arevalo was the top Lancer finisher with a time of 23:44 (71st overall). Yvonne Gayton and Makayla Valdez followed Arevalo, with Sarah Jackson and freshman Rachel Sianez just behind them.

The Sierra varsity boys extended their season as well, finishing as one of the top-10 advancing programs with a sixth-place overall finish. Ricky Morris was the squads’ top individual finisher, closing the race in 17:28, good for 15th place. Thomas Trzcinski (18:15), Miguel Velazquez (18:20), Jonathan Velazquez (18:41) and Kyle Furtado (18:42) all stayed within 30-seconds of each other for an impressive showing. Junior Mike Leland (19:02) and Juan Williams (19:42) rounded out the advancing Timberwolves.

Sierra’s JV squad also found its way into the section meet, earning a second-place finish behind Bret Harte in the JV Boys Division-III, IV and V race.  James Greer turned in the team’s best time with a 19:12 finish, followed by Nikolas Dotson (19:26), Jake Duncan (20:33), Zach Johnston (20:40) and Tyler Ryan (20:41). Teammate Dakota Burgdorf rounded out the Timberwolves squad with a 35th place overall finish.
The Section Meet is scheduled to get underway Saturday at 9 a.m. at Willow Hill Cross Country Course in Folsom.

Manteca High sophomore Gabriella Vazquez also advanced to the sophomore girls section meet with a time of 15:44, as did Buffaloe teammates Martin Ponce (13:38) and Isaiah Cruz (13:39) in the boys division.
