ELK GROVE – The Sierra High Timberwolves rebounded from a tough first round loss in the Elk Grove Tournament with a strong performance in a 67-46 win over Florin High.

Sierra (1-1) was handled easily by Woodcreek High 74-38 Thursday, but shook off any ill-effects of the tournament opening loss to blow past the Panthers. The win handed Sierra a berth into the tournament’s consolation championship.

“This was absolutely a good win for us,” Sierra head coach Scott Thomason said. “Especially the way our game went (Thursday) and for our guys to bounce back that was a positive sight.
“Eddie Andrade hit a couple of big three’s for us in the second half and we were able to kind of win it going away.”

The Timberwolves got double-digit scoring from four players, with Trevor Nogueria leading all scorers with 24 points. Allan Sampanyan added 11, while David Keating and Jerrod Patton both chipped in 10.

Sierra will look to hand Christian Brothers High a loss when the two teams meet up at 12:30 p.m. for the consolation title.

The Knights improved their record to 2-0 and find themselves in position to snatch the Ron Peterson Tipoff Classic with a victory over the host Riverbank Bruins in the tournament championship tonight.

Ripon Christian was led by Tyler Goslinga who turned in a game-high 27 points, while Logan Vos and Daniel Van De Pol finished with 13 and 10, respectively.

The Knights will need a strong effort in the tourney title game against a solid Riverbank Bruins program.

“They are going to try and make it an up-tempo game and they’re going to try and take away Tyler inside” Ripon Christian head coach Ron Vander Molen said. “We’re going to have to be able to answer that with some balanced scoring from the perimeter.”

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Indians had ample opportunities to land a spot in the tournament championship, but a solid Victory Christian effort in overtime leaves Ripon playing in the tourney’s third-place game.

“We had our opportunities we just didn’t take advantage of them,” Ripon head coach Rod Wright said. “They were a good team and this just shows that we still have a long way to go. We still have to get better every day.”

Matt Ratto continued his hot season-opening start, leading the Indians with 23 points, including three 3-pointers. Ratto scored 12 of his total in the pivotal fourth period. Ripon will look to close out the tournament with a victory over Big Valley Christian or Jim Elliot Christian semifinal matchup.
