Sierra, Manteca win VOL openers

It won’t take long for defending Valley Oak League champion Manteca and Sierra to get reacquainted on the tennis courts.
They’ll meet for a big showdown Thursday at Manteca after both cruised to swift victories in their VOL openers Tuesday.
Sierra started out with an 8-1 win over visiting East Union, dominating all six singles matches in the process. No. 1 player Kaitlyn Rausa, No. 3 Ellie Kim and No. 5 Sydney Huynh all won, 6-0, 6-0. Natalia Petrovic held off Irabel Moreno 6-0, 6-4 to avoid a third set from the No. 2 spot. Melanie Nguyen (6-1, 6-1) and Alyssa Patterson (6-2, 6-0) also had wins.
East Union’s lone point came from No. 1 doubles, as Nicole Meza-Bueno and Hailey Huber-Gosney downed Diana Duenas and Seerit Gill, 7-5, 6-0.Amaya Balut and Joyce Sebastian prevailed 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 doubles spot, while Xochitl Torres and Arianna Herrera swept, 6-0, 6-0.

MODESTO — The Buffaloes (1-0, 3-1) took care of business, getting their only challenge at No. 3 doubles where Noeli Mercado and Melissa Poncini squeaked out a 6-3, 7-5 win.
Julia Tang dispatched Sarah Van Ness 6-2, 6-2 at No.1 singles. Koryn Menasco (6-1, 6-0), Taylor Corona (6-1, 6-1), Makenna Condit (6-0, 6-2), Sahiba Kaur (6-1, 6-0) and Stephanie Mercado (6-1, 6-0) coasted to sweeps.
Manteca’s top doubles team of Ravneet Dhillon and Navina Mann triumphed, 6-3, 6-2. Julianne Eavenson and Kaileah Johannson added a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

STOCKTON — The young Cougars nearly avoided a shutout, as No. 5 singles player Elaine Pasqual came up short against Breanna Morgan, 5-7, 5-7.
No. 6 Angelee Rivera nearly extended her match before falling to Shannon Yang, 2-6, 5-7.
