MODESTO — An impressive volley from Jadyn Shinn proved to be the difference in Sierra’s 2-1 win over Central Catholic on Thursday

The standout striker blasted in the needed insurance goal in the 43rd minute with her powerful right boot after Callie Crain lofted a long free kick into the penalty box. Ten minutes later, Central Catholic (2-2-0 Valley Oak League, 10-6-1 overall) cut the deficit in half as Sarah Vlha converted on a counter attack.

Although it’s the first VOL meeting between the two contending sides, Sierra (4-0-0, 13-0-1) previously down the Raiders 3-2 in the final round of its Vern Gebhardt Champions Cup last month.

“It’s always tough when you have to play a league rival three times,” Sierra coach Manuel Pires said. “You could tell this team was ready, they brought he intensity up but so did we.”

Tiana Cello gave Sierra the early advantage on a second-chance opportunity. Daisy Valencia set up Shinn for a shot on goal with a header into the box, but the Central Catholic keeper was able to deflect it away. Cello was in the right spot to finish it.

Michaela Bitle came up with three saves for Sierra, which attempted 13 shots on goal to Central’s six. The Timberwolves are in for another battle tonight when they head to cross-town rival Manteca.

East Union 6, Kimball 0

The host Lancers (4-0, 9-3) got all they needed in the opening two minutes when Jasmine Mejia and Hailey Sims each scored a goal.

Sims finished with a hat trick, while Jennae Ramirez and Mariana Huizar each chipped in a goal. Savannah Hudson, Taysha McGuire and Chelsey Medeiro contributed assists. Freshmen keepers Malia Allen and Kyle Mendez combined to notch the team’s fourth straight shutout.

Manteca 8, Lathrop 0

Manteca (3-0, 11-3) broke away with three goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half and added four more for good measure in the second.

Kaley Miller led the Buffaloes with two goals and two assists. Kaitlyn Funsch was assisted by Jordyn Silva on back-to-back goals in the second half. Alexa Mayen contributed a goal and an assist, and Ashleen Kahar capped the final score off a pass from Carolyn Morrish. Madison Burch also scored a goal. Aimee Meier collected five saves.

Oakdale 6,

Weston Ranch 1

OAKDALE — Oakdale (2-2, 6-4) jumped out with four unanswered goals before the visiting Cougars (0-4-1, 3-11-2) struck in the 36th minute.

Natalie Boutsy recorded Weston Ranch’s lone goal with the assist coming from Selena Landin. Goalie Aliyah Guerrero finished with 11 saves.

Jasmine Mast punched in the deciding goal for East Union in the first half, and Jasmine Martinez helped preserve the win with a strong defensive effort.
