Sierra sinks East Union to keep pace with MHS

Sierra is a step closer to its rematch with Valley Oak League-leading Manteca after a dominant effort at East Union on Thursday.

The Timberwolves won handily 8-1 and improves to 7-1.

It was all Sierra in singles play, with Katelyn Rausa cruising past Erica Canas 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 duel. Nadia Petrovic defeated Isabel Moreno 6-0, 6-1 at No.2 singles. 

Other singles winners for Sierra were Ellie Kim (6-1, 6-0) over Angel Volk, Melanie Nguyen (6-2, 6-3) over Sarah Gloeckler, Sydney Huynh (6-2, 6-2) over Bradee Jeffery and Natlie Rootsaert (6-0, 6-0) over Jennifer Garcia.

East Union got its point from No. 1 doubles partners Hailey Gosney and Nadia Cardona, who grinded out a 4-6, 7-6 (2), 10-5 win over Alyssa Patterson and Amaya Baluyut. 

Sierra’s Diana Duenas and Joyce Sebastian held off Nicole Bueno and Carmen Tantaros 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles showdown. Xochitl Torres and Mikayla Coburn beat Julia Telles and Sarah Cohoon 6-1, 6-2 in the third doubles match.

 

Manteca 9,

Make it 10 straight wins for the Buffaloes (8-0, 10-1 overall), who fended off the Raiders of Modesto with ease to begin the second half of the VOL schedule.

No. 1 singles player Julia Tang rolled past Sarah Van Ness, 6-4, 6-2. 

The rest of the Buffaloes’ singles players kept their perfect records against league opponents intact, as Koryn Menasco beat Suzanne Manseau, 6-2, 6-2. Taylor Corona (6-0, 6-1), Makenna Condit (6-0, 6-0), Sahiba Kaur (6-0, 6-0) and Stephanie Mercado (6-2, 6-1) had easy sweeps.

Manteca’s doubles teams are also undefeated in league. At No. 1 doubles, Ravneet Dhillon and Navina Mann routed Lilly Borba and Josephine Henderson, 6-0, 6-3. Julianne Eavenson and Kaileah Johannson prevailed, 6-3, 6-1. Central Catholic forfeited at No. 3 doubles.

Weston Ranch 1

OAKDALE — Weston Ranch’s lone win came from Jella Batac and Ekam Kaur, who squeaked out a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 comeback win over Paige Morgan and Savannah Gustafson in the No. 2 doubles match.

Carly Burks was competitive in the No. 3 singles spot for the Cougars, dropping a 4-6, 2-6 decision to Mackinzie Brown. Weston Ranch’s top doubles team of Alelih Galvadores and Mimi Lasinde lost 2-6, 4-6 against Shannon Yang and Callie Rariden.
