East Union High’s girls golfers were fans of crosstown rival Sierra on Monday.
That’s because Sierra broke up a first-place tie in the Valley Oak League with its narrow 274-277 victory over Oakdale Monday at Manteca Park Golf Course.
For weeks, East Union, Oakdale and Sonora were locked in a three-way struggle for the top spot. Last Thursday, East Union avenged its only loss to Sonora to leave two at the top.
Oakdale (7-2) defeated Sierra at Oakdale Golf and Country Club Sept. 13, and it wasn’t close, 242-292.
Sierra, solidly in fourth with a 4-5 record, came close to defeating Sonora recently on its home course. Monday was clearly the biggest win of the season for the young Timberwolves, who were led by Holly Cook’s 52.
Lexus Barnes (53), Breanne Lenoci (55) and Elia Vazquez (56) were also among the top performers of the match, with Tora Hohn and Melanie Kiesel each turning in a 58.
Mabel Wong, Oakdale’s freshman phenom, was the medalist with a 3-over-40.

Despite missing its No. 2 singles player, Sierra engaged in four competitive matches in the two-day, round-robin tournament.
The Timberwolves split on Friday, defeating Heritage of Brentwood 4-3 and losing by the same score to St. Patrick’s-St. Vincent of Vallejo. On Saturday, they got past Clayton Valley 5-2 and lost to tourney host Freedom, 4-3.
Naomi Nunis performed well as the fill-in No. 2 singles player, winning all four of her matches. She kept her undefeated run intact with a well-earned three-set victory (3-6, 6-2, 10-8) against Clayton Valley.
Vannida Nguyen, Sierra’s top singles player and VOL favorite, suffered a 2-6, 0-6 setback to St. Patrick’s-St. Vincent standout Adrienne Sturgis but swept the rest of her matches. Anna Cardenas also went 3-1, while Maddie Banks was 2-0 from the No. 4 spot on Saturday.
On Friday, Banks teamed up with Brenda Padilla to earn one of just two doubles points won by Sierra in the tournament.
