Sierra’s Kevin Rausa is in line to win the VOL singles title if he can upset Kimball’s Logan Staggs for the crown Thursday.
The Valley Oak League’s singles tournament had a No. 1 seed expected to make it to Thursday’s Championship match, and a No. 2 seed that shows he deserves the challenge. Sierra’s Kevin Rausa handled his portion of the deal, earning a spot against league No. 1 seed Logan Staggs for the league crown.

Rausa put together an impressive opening day of competition, blowing through Sonora’s Andrew Klatt (8-0) and Daniel Dunning (6-0, 6-4) to make it to the semifinals. Rausa found a serious challenge in East Union’s Ricky Peloso, who took Rausa the distance before falling in three.

Rausa edged out the Lancer 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 12-10 for a shot at the tile.

Manteca singles player, and tournament No. 5 seed Alex Barragan had a nice tournament run, beating Kevin Sung of Kimball (8-0) and Josh Smith of Sonora (6-3, 6-4) before falling to Staggs 6-2, 6-0 to end the tourney.

Teammates Xavier Lopez (No. 6 seed) and Jacob Webb also landed victories, with Lopez falling to Peloso 6-4, 6-4 in a very close battle.

The VOL’s doubles tournament will get under way Thursday as the singles championship will be under way. Manteca’s doubles tandem of Oral Nunis and Max Angelo closed out an impressive VOL season, but will now have to fend off the singles players who will team up for doubles action. As quality of a season as the pair has put together, finishing with the league title will be a difficult task.

“The top teams will be advancing to Sections,” Manteca head coach Frank Fontana said. “Whether they are doubles teams, or combination singles players, the top doubles teams will advance.

“The players who deserve to go will go.”

Doubles action will get under way in Sonora Thursday at 9 a.m.
