LATHROP — Beyer continued its march through the girls Western Athletic Conference soccer season Monday with a 5-2 road win over Lathrop at Bennie Gatto Field.

The Patriots remain undefeated in the WAC at 5-0, while being 5-3 overall.

“I think our girls played well and they continue to dominate the league,” Beyer coach Melonie Albino said. “We are looking forward to going to the championship.”

The Patriots took a 5-1 halftime lead behind four Leah O’Brien goals, with three coming inside of a four-minute span.

Ary Jones got the Spartans on the board in the 28th minute when she took a pass from Morgan Penko and finessed it into the net to make the score 4-1.

Jones got the only goal of the second half late in the game when she bent a direct kick around the Patriots wall and past the goalie to make the score 5-2.

“It was a good ball in,” Jones said of her first goal. “The ball game off of a deflection, she (Penko) passed it back to me and I took a right-footed shot.

“On the direct kick I went to aim for near post because I saw the wall was slightly off and I went for the little opening.”

These two teams met in mid-December when Beyer ran away with an 11-0 shutout. Lathrop coach Diana Nevarez is pleased with her team’s progress since then with its record now at 4-5 in the WAC and 6-10-1 overall.

“We came out strong in the second half,” Nevarez said. “We got a couple of goals on them and for us, considering the last time we played them, that was great.

“We know the girls are capable of doing it when they work hard and work together.”

The Patriots outshot the Spartans 21-13 with Lathrop goalie Samreen Ball pulling in nine saves.

The Spartans travel to Los Banos on Wednesday to face Pacheco at 6:30 p.m.
