The East Union girls soccer team scored early and often in Wednesday’s 11-0 Valley Oak League victory over Weston Ranch at Dino Cunial Field.
The Lancers (6-3 VOL, 8-7-2) jumped out to an 8-0 first-half advantage led by sophomore forward Thania Valencia, who kicked four of her game-high five goals during that span.
Taylor McMahon also scored twice while Cynthia Romero, who had the game’s first score, along with Breanna Flores, Hailey Sims and Taylor Campbell netted one goal apiece.
Melissa Gonzales and Sims were each credited with two assists.
“Everyone played,” said East Union coach Carlos Gaspar, who was particularly pleased with his team working efficiently at finishing plays and working together in combos against the Cougars (0-9 VOL, 0-15-2).
Weston Ranch coach Gabe Padilla added, saying: “We were without a key starter tonight and having two injuries (to our girls) happening early on didn’t help our cause.  I had to shuffle around the lineup in order to compensate – we had girls playing where they normally don’t play.”
Still, he praised his girls for battling through the adversity.
Cougars goalie Evelyn Soria managed seven saves.
