SOCCER: Manteca boys snap 5-game skid; Ripon girls win 1st-place TVL tilt

Manteca snapped a five-game skid on Thursday with its 3-0 Valley Oak League win at Central Catholic.

Fernando Lopez scored twice, Adriel Vega contributed two assists and Ethan Fraser had a goal and an assist. Goalie Leo Garcia racked up four saves.

“The win is nice, but we're still playing below our potential,” coach James Burns said. “This team needs on-field leaders to emerge; players who are consistent with their play and energy, and demand more from their teammates.”

The Buffaloes (1-2, 7-12-1) kept the shutout despite playing a man down with a red-card ejection. Lopez now leads the team with eight goals on the season.

Sierra 1, Kimball 1

The Timberwolves (2-0-1, 6-4-3 overall) were able to sneak out a result from this high-paced VOL affair at Kimball (2-0-1, 7-1-1).

After missing on several good chances, Sierra finally got its tying tally in the second half from Paul Barrios who was assisted by Emmanuel Ruiz.

 

East Union 4, Oakdale 0

The host Lancers (3-0 VOL, 11-7-1 overall) did all of their damage in the first half, getting two goals from Giovanni Perez.

Angel Guzman and Julian Rodriguez scored one apiece. Alexis Berber, Juan Reynoso and Preston Avila each contributed an assist.

Goalie Andres Garcia had two penalty-kick saves to preserve the shutout.

 

VARSITY GIRLS

Ripon Christian 11, Le Grand 0

Alanna Blanco had a hat trick, while Brooke Barnes and Dayna Koolhaas scored two goals each in the Knights’ one-sided Southern Athletic League win at home. The Knights (4-1-1, 12-3-1 overall)

Addison DeJong and Kate Vander Veen each converted a penalty kick, and Helia Vander Meulen also scored.

Tatun Sonke distributed three assists. Jeanne Oosterman, DeJong, Blanco, Koolhaas and Vander Meulen each had an assist.

 

Ripon 3, Hilmar 1

Olivia Maragos opened scoring in the 14th minute and put away the insurance goal in the 78th to help give Ripon (3-0, 8-7-1 overall) an important road win in its Trans-Valley League title defense.

Hilmar (2-1, 12-5-2) tied the game with Brisa Gonzales’ penalty kick in the 20th minute. The Indians recaptured the lead for good 10 minutes into the second half when Katie Martin cashed in on Malia Locarnini’s corner kick.

Ripon had an overwhelming 19-3 advantage on shot attempts, and goalie Leilani Torres had one save.
