Jocelin Roa scored both of Sierra’s goals Monday, helping the 10th-seeded Timberwolves upset No. 7 Golden Valley 2-1 at UC Merced.
They will hit the road again Wednesday for a quarterfinal matchup with No. 2 Ponderosa (11-4-4), a 5-1 victor over Rosemont.
Freshman Leslie Reyes assisted Roa’s second goal, which pushed Sierra (12-6-4) ahead, 2-0. The Cougars (9-4-2) answered with Kayla Perez’s late penalty kick but were unable to net the equalizer.
“Jocelin did a great job,” Sierra coach Manuel Pires said. “We pretty much took advantage of the field because it was super big, which created more space. She was able to connect well with her teammates, and she even had a couple nice crosses that were not too far off.”
Annika Beall had some big stops in the first half to keep it scoreless, finishing with seven saves.
“It was a good win, we just have to focus on the next opponent now,” Pires said. “It will be a good challenge going up to Ponderosa next.”
