Sonora goes down swinging in VOL loss

Sonora’s Emma Holloway earned medalist honors with a 3-over 39 at the Mountain Springs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, but that wasn’t enough to knock off undefeated East Union.

The Lancers, who were led by Brooke Riley’s team-low 4-over 40, improved to 4-0 in the Valley Oak League after handing Sonora a 231-244 loss.

“I was really impressed with Sonora today,” East Union co-head golf coach Dennis Wells said. “It was a tough, tricky course. Everybody had a tough time out there, and everybody from Sonora played pretty solid.”

Breanna Perkins and Brittany Ugalino both recorded 43s for EU. Jocelyn Duncan shot a 44 and Brittany Conijn rpunded out the total with a 61.

East Union (6-0) will next play against Weston Ranch today at 3:30 p.m.



Sierra 279, Manteca 296

Sierra improved to 2-2 in the VOL after dealing Manteca a 17-stroke loss at the Manteca Parks Golf Course.

Lexus Barnes led the T’Wolves with a 52. McKenna Doyle (58), Vanessa Rodriguez (57), Kayla Wilson (55) and Krystal Rayevich (57) all contributed as well. Legacy Barnes was Sierra’s throw-out with a 61.

Manteca’s Katie Hankins shot a team-low 54.

Kaylie Grimes shot 59 and Dominique Graham carded 58. Isabella Garza-Mendez (60) and Danika Hunt (65) rounded out the Buffalo total. Sarah Vegas’ 66 was the throw-away.



VOLLEYBALL

Liberty Ranch 3, Lathrop 0


Lathrop suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 2-1 after a 25-10, 25-17, 25-20 loss against visiting Liberty Ranch of Galt.

Desiree Mendola led the Spartans with eight kills, eight digs and six serving aces. Liz Brambila tallied five kills, and so did Loreal Taylor.

Kim Duenas had 10 digs and two serving aces for the Spartans, who will open up VOL play on the road on Sept. 18 against Oakdale.
