LATHROP – On the back of a strong performance on the mound by Oscar Calix, the Lathrop Spartans erupted for 10 runs in a five-inning rout of Rio Vista for their first varsity win Friday.
Calix allowed only one hit and walked two batters in his five innings on the mound. He struck out nine, and finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
Kevin Howard went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, a stolen base, and scored twice, and Gabriel Castellanos finished the day 1 for 2 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Pablo Chavez finished 1 for 3 with two RBI’s and a pair of runs scored as well.
Kevin Moreno scored three runs in the contest.
East Union showed a ton of offensive power, banging out 11 hits, including a pair of two-run homers.
“I thought we played pretty well and we were able to learn a lot,” East Union head coach Dan Triglia said. “There were a lot of positive things, but we also didn’t take care of the ball.
“We just have to get a little more consistent and we will.”
Steven Gigli went 2-for-4 for the Lancers, including a 2-run homerun, while teammate Joe Modesto connected for the other 2-run homer for his only hit of the contest. Ricky Inderbitzin paced the Lancers, going 3-for-4 with a double.
East Union (1-1) will be back on the diamond Monday when they play host to the Tracy Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m.
Brock Swift paced East Union (1-1) at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and a RBI. Teammate Jesus Esquivel went 2-for-4 and also scored two runs. Lancer Justin Ontiveros collected two walks and came around to score on both occasions.
“This game could have gone either way,” East Union assistant coach Mike James said. “We’re extremely happy with the way they came back and continued to fight.”
Lodi opened the game with an eight-run first inning, leaving East Union with a mountain to climb just to get back in the contest. Things won’t get any easier for the Lancers as they roll out the welcome mats for Tracy High Monday.
Jared Weiler led the club going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored, while Preston Rizo and Ernie Garcia both tallied a hit and a stolen base. Both Rizo and Garcia scored a run and Weiler also added an RBI.
