Spartans collect season’s second win in WAC play

MODESTO — Lathrop picked up its second win of the season on Monday, scoring in every inning except for the fourth to coast past Johansen 7-4 in a Western Athletic Conference game.

The Spartans (2-7 WAC, 2-11 overall) plated a run in five innings, two in the fifth and none in the fourth. They repelled a late rally from the Vikings (0-9, 1-13), who got three runs back in the bottom of the sixth.

Matt Julien pitched a complete game and was productive at the plate, going 2 for 2 with two runs. Twp RBIs, two walks and a sacrifice fly. He also fired seven strikeouts while scattering only five hits.

Lathrop had chances to ended it earlier but left 14 runners on base. Cristopfer Landa (double, RBI ru) and Michael Pacheco (RBI) both went 2 for 4. Freshman Jeremiah Estante drilled an RBI double and scored twice.

The Spartans dropped a heartbreaker, giving up the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh. They plated the first two runs of the game in the top of the third and tied it at 3-3 in the sixth.

Anthony Mendoza batted 2 for 4 and drove in one of Lathrop’s runs. Ian Oino kocked in another. Kimo Fernandez and Jeremy Julien each belted a pair of hits and scored once. Isaiah Baumbardner made the most of his lone plate appearance, getting a hit and plating a run.
