Sophomore Danielle Sperry improved to 3-0 with her eight-strikeout, three-hit gem, and Ripon continued its early-season roll with a 7-0 win over visiting Summerville on Tuesday.

Tiana Chacon helped preserve Sperry’s shutout with a nice over-the-shoulder catch in deep right center field that kept a Summerville runner from scoring from second. Chacon was also 2 for 3 with a steal on offense.

“Danielle was a little off with her pitches at the start, but once she settled down and started throwing strikes she was pretty much in control from that point,” Ripon coach Robert Vernon said.

Leadoff hitter Darian Vandermaaten (RBI, double, two steals, two runs) and Taylor Vernon (RBI, double) were also 2 for 3. The Indians (5-0-1) scored at least a run in the first three innings and tacked on their final three in the fifth.

Ripon will face better competition in the coming days. It first heads to Alameda on Thursday to square off with St. Joseph Notre Dame (2-1). On Friday the Indians travel to Woodland where they will be greeted by defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion Pioneer (4-0).

Argonaut 4, Manteca 1

Peyton Rose struck out seven and gave up two unearned runs in six innings for the Buffaloes (3-2), who committed two errors in Jackson.

Argonaut (3-1-1) plated two runs in each of the third and fourth innings. Freshman Sierra Martinez drove in Annissa Gonzalez (2 for 3, double) in the top of the fourth for Manteca’s lone score.
