CERES — East Union High’s 1-2 backfield punch of Paul Fajardo and Steven Gigli shined in the Squires’ 41-33 shootout victory over Ceres Friday to even their Valley Oak League record to 3-3.

Fajardo had just seven carries but made the most of them, rushing for 205 yards and three touchdowns. He even had two receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown.

The shifty Gigli also left his mark with 121 yards and two TDs. The quarterback completed four of seven passes for 67 yards.

Coach Carlos Herrera attributed to the dominant play to linemen freshman linemen C.J. Cardenas, Brennan Koeller, Rodrigo Alvarez, Anthony Cerna and sophomore Josh Kolkmann. The line helped Fajardo and Gigli rip off big TD runs of 49, 79, 40, 42 and 59 yards.

“We played excellent offensively,” Herrera said. “We put it all together, and now we have the kids playing and believing in themselves.”

Alex Dias, T.J. Williams, Marcus Aguilar, Tyler Hardesty and Zak Lewallen played well on defense.

East Union (3-6) closes the season at rival Manteca High’s Guss Schmiedt Field this Friday.
