Stevens finds his touch as Ripon topples McNair

Cole Stevens had his best shooting effort on a night in which he did not feel well.

“Maybe he should play sick more often,” Ripon coach Rod Wright said.

The sophomore guard lit up McNair for five 3-pointers and 23 points, and the Indians won 58-48 in the opening round of the 38th Frank Godinez Tournament at Turlock High.

“It was nice to see him hit those,” Wright added.

He had been waiting for this type of breakout from his lone returning player. In Ripon’s first five games he made just 2 out of 30 attempts from long range. Stevens wasn’t the only one feeling it Thursday, as the Indians (4-2) converted a season-high nine 3s.

Mario Roach contributed 14 points to the win, while Aaron Paschini had the hot hand early as he fired eight of his 10 points in the first quarter. Ripon led 20-9 after the first quarter and never trail from there.

Isaiah Harris had 16 points for the still-winless Eagles (0-5) and bothered Ripon shooters with his shot-blocking ability throughout. The Indians are still without one of their main post players, Cody Haines, who is expected to be out for at least another week with an ankle sprain.

Ripon faces tourney host Turlock in the semifinal tonight starting at 8:30.

Four other tournaments involving Manteca-area teams were postponed Thursday night because of the inclement weather. They are expected to begin today. Ripon Christian’s boys are participating in the Galt Warrior Classic. For the girls, Manteca is part of the Lodi Tournament Field, Sierra will be at the Lincoln Tournament and Ripon Christian heads to Brentwood for the Liberty Tournament.
