Everything finally fell into place for the Sierra High volleyball team during a convincing 3-0 win over the Lathrop Spartans. Sierra was forced to put the lingering effects of back-to-back Valley Oak League losses out of its system and try and pull their unit back on the right track.
“We played well enough to win,” Timberwolves head coach Tevani Liotard said. “But it was even more nice coming on the heels of our upset loss we experienced Monday.
“It was good to get it all together.”
Sierra dominated from the opening taking down the Spartans 25-9, 25-12, and 25-17 to raise their VOL mark to 3-3, hopefully setting the team back on course for a berth into the Sac-Joaquin Section playoff tournament.
Modesty Rodriguez led the charge for Sierra, collecting 21 assists and dishing out nine service points, including an ace. Teammate Alysia Atkins had an outstanding performance giving the team with 11 kills, 17 service points including four aces.
Timberwolve standout Jaslynn Liotard chipped in 14 kills and five blocks to help pull Sierra up to a .500 league mark.
Sierra will look to continue with full speed ahead as they prepare for a tough week that will include games against Weston Ranch and cross-town foe Manteca on consecutive nights.
“I’m hoping that we are able to play well,” Liotard said. “We should win all three. You just never know, after seeing us play Monday (3-1 loss to Central Valley) it depends on what team wants it more.
“Sometimes it’s not the best team that wins, it comes down to heart.”
Mariah Navarro led the club with 10 kills, while teammate Davina Bennett put together an inspired effort, collecting 20 assists, 14 service points and three aces in the win. Cynthia Perez amassed five digs and three aces, while Dallas Mould chipped in three blocks to control the net.
The win elevated the Buffaloes to 2-4 in VOL action and they will look to continue with the momentum as they travel to Lathrop to take on the Spartans Oct. 5 at Lathrop High.
The Lancers dropped the first two games before reeling off three straight wins to take the match.
“My comeback kids pulled it off again,” East Union head coach Eryn Bowers said. “We were down in game one and two, but the entire team played tonight with heart and energy.
“Everyone played and everyone stepped up for us tonight.”
The Lancers evened their VOL mark to 3-3 with the 16-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-19 and 18-16 scores in its five sets against Bulldogs. Gianna Hedin played a prominent role in the Lancers’ success putting, together a serving exhibition complete with 13 aces.

Manteca 3, Central Valley 0
The Manteca Buffaloes had little trouble disposing the Central Valley Hawks in three games to earn its second win of the VOL season.
