Ripon High teammates Valerie Chun and Crystallynn Tran placed 10th and 11th, respectively, in the varsity girls 100-yard butterfly consolation heat last Friday in the Sac-Joaquin Section Swimming Finals at District 56 in Elk Grove.

They’re among the few swimmers from area schools to compete on the final day of the meet. The top three players of each race as well as at-large qualifiers make it to the California Interscholastic Federation Championships held May 15-17 at Clovis Olympic Swim Complex.

Chun and Tran each competed in two events at the section meet. Chun finished the 100 fly consolation final in 57.46 seconds, with Tran following in 58.03. Both 100 fly times surpassed Chun’s previous school record.

Both narrowly missed out on second consolation berths. Chun placed 18th in the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 13.72 seconds, while Tran took 17th in the 100 back stroke in 1:02.70.

Sierra junior Bayen Ballew also made the varsity consolation finals, finishing 16th in the 50 free in 22.21 seconds.

Lathrop freshman Victoria Guzman qualified for the consolation finals in two varsity races but did not return Friday. She clocked the 13th best times during the trails last Wednesday in both the 200 free (1:59.78) and 500 free (5:22.15).

Andrew Hanker made the final in the frosh-division division, finishing 12th in the 50 free (23.27) and 11th in the 100 free (50.57). Boen West earned qualifying times in the 200 free (16th, 1:53.24) and 100 fly (ninth, 58.13) but did not participate in the finals.

Ripon’s Brody Biedermann (50 free, 21st, 22.28; 100 free, 25th, 49.46) and Matthew Lee (200 free, 34th, 1:51.77; 100 free, 27th, 49.50) both swam in three varsity events during the trials on Thursday. They were also part of Ripon’s 200 free relay (20th, 1:33.45) with Oscar Guerra and Teo West.

Keira Brink (50 free, 19th, 25.09; 100 free, 30th, 56.31) and Bianca Fraser (200 IM, 31st, 2:23.44; 100 fly, 33rd, 1:05.00) represented Sierra in four varsity races in the preliminaries. They were joined by Abigail Fraser and Charlene Trinh for the 200 free relay (18th, 1:48.45) and Abigail Fraser and Kaylee Hayne for the 200 medley relay (22nd, 2:02.79).

Ripon residents Reyna and Emery Biedermann were both finalists in relay events for St. Mary’s. The sisters were on the Rams’ ninth-place 400 relay (3:39.23). Reyna, a sophomore, was on the eighth-place 200 free relay (1:39.13), and freshman Emery was on the 10th-place 200 medley relay (1:55.42).

Individually, Reyna placed 13th in the 200 free consolation final (1:58.61) and 12th in the 500 free consolation final (5:21.61). Emery competed in the 100 back (27th, 1:06.36) and 100 free (34th, 56.66).
