ESCALON – After two days of action and enough matches to last a season, East Union High’s Stevyn Teeple finished the 23rd Annual Lloyd Engel Wrestling Tournament with the 135-pound title Saturday at Escalon High.
Teeple joined teammate Devin Woodall as the only Manteca area wrestlers to garner a championship during the annual event. Woodall improved his record to 25-3 on the season, grabbing the heavyweight championship on a first round pin.
Teeple took the longer rout, outlasting his opponent for a 5-4 decision and his weight-class’s bragging rights.
“I came in wanting to have a good tournament,” Teeple said. “I was feeling pretty good and hoping for a victory. I’ve been dealing with an injury this week, but it all worked out for me.”
Teeple was honored with one of three tournament buckles handed out to tournament standouts. He was recognized as the tournament’s outstanding middleweight wrestler for his impressive performance.
Sierra High came up short in their bid to grab a title. They dropped a pair of championship matches during tournament finals.
In the 215-pound division, Ray Widmer rolled into the championship bracket final, but could not close the deal, succumbing to a pin for a second place finish. Teammate Aidan Foster ran into some misfortune, as a simple twist in direction left an official out of position and Foster gasping to hold on.
“Aidan had just scored a takedown and was in control of the match,” Sierra head coach Bob Blanco said. “And they come back from off the mat and his guy had a hold of just his neck. He was choking him which is an illegal hold. “It happened and it’s unfortunate because he should have stopped the match.
“I feel bad for Aidan because I know he could have beaten the guy.”
Weston Ranch saw two of its standouts place, as Grant Mar and Chris Contreas finished with third and fourth place finishes, respectively. Heavyweight Fonga Tia earned a second place finish in the “B” bracket final.
Marco Casteneda (125-pound) took second place in the tournament final, while teammate Jason Cortez earned a third place finish for the Lancers.
“I thought we’d be able to get four titles actually,” East Union head coach A.J. Reindel. “Jason Cortez got a tough draw, because Jason went against the eventual champion in the second round and lost 4-2. That sent us to the consolation and the wrestler who was runner up, Jason beat him 9-2.
“Overall, they’re coming around and I really see that I have some quality kids.”
